One Storm, Multiple Tornadoes: NW Oklahoma Sees Major Twister Near Fairview
Thursday, March 5th, was a wild weather day in Western Oklahoma.
What started out as a chance for some wind and hail escalated to a prime tornado day, and it delivered.
It was a weird forecast update too. The National Weather Service said the chance of tornadoes was small, but if tornadoes popped up, they would be big.
Nailed It
While it's always hard getting pictures of our storms after dark, the chasers were able to get some video of at least one very large wedge tornado outside of Fairview last night.
@myradarwx A massive tornado passed west of Fairview, Oklahoma and near Cleo Springs on Thursday night, March 5. It was likely in excess of a half mile wide! #tornado #oklahoma #tornadoseason #weather #meteorology ♬ original sound - MyRadar
This storm kept dropping big twisters too. As one tornado would burn out, the storm would recycle and drop a new one as it headed up into Kansas.
Even though it was a monster tornado, since it happened in mostly rural Oklahoma, early assumptions are that this twister will most likely be categorized as an EF3. The EF-scale measures damage, not windspeed or size.
There is a chance the NWS will upgrade it higher as the surveys happen over the next few days, but with so little to destroy in rural NWOK, it's anybody's guess.
Today, March 6th, it's Central and Eastern Oklahoma's big weather day. The forecasts haven't been enhanced, but this is Oklahoma. Tornadoes are possible every day.
