Oklahoma Sky Lights Up With Northern Lights in Rare 2025 Sighting
It’s not every day the Northern Lights show up in Oklahoma, but last night the sky over parts of the state lit up in colors you usually have to travel north to see. The aurora borealis was visible across several Oklahoma towns, giving folks a rare chance to catch the glow without leaving home.
Where the Northern Lights Were Seen in Oklahoma
My sister texted me asking if I could see it. She said she couldn't, living in a town of about 20k people, so I instinctively assumed I wouldn't either. Lawton's city lights usually ruin any chance at stargazing, but to my surprise, while the colors were faint, it was clear enough to see with the naked eye.
Of course, phone cameras picked it up perfectly. It was a flurry of pinks and purples dancing low on the horizon. It didn’t last long, but it was worth standing outside for.
Funny thing is, not everyone got to see it. My cousin out west near Hollis had a dark, empty sky. No color, no glow, nothing. That’s out where it’s darker than a power outage, too. Another friend on the east side of Lawton said they couldn’t spot a thing either, but maybe that’s just age and cataracts catching up.
From what I’ve seen online, visibility across Oklahoma was spotty... some towns got the full light show, others missed it entirely. But for the lucky few, it felt like a once-in-a-lifetime night. The Northern Lights over Oklahoma… it still sounds strange to say.
If 2025 keeps this up, we might need to start watching the weather reports for space storms.
