Today is National Cheeseburger Day, one of those unofficial food holidays that somehow lands with more weight than the rest. Nobody’s lining up for National Celery Stick Day, but slap a slice of cheese on top of a burger patty and suddenly America’s got something worth celebrating.

Why Cheeseburgers Deserve Their Own Holiday

It’s not exactly clear who decided cheeseburgers deserved their own holiday, but let’s be honest, they probably weren’t wrong. Burgers are about as American as it gets. No matter how much we disagree politically, we mostly agree that burgers are one of the great commonalities we all share.

Cheeseburgers bind us as Americans, and everyone has a favorite.

I like independent drive-in burgers. It’s the way that paper wrap gets soaked in greasy goodness. Everyone knows gnawing the extra cheese off the wrapper is peak civilization in a moment like that. Others prefer the fast-casual burger you get at the sit-down restaurants... but I digress, who is ordering the burger at a wing place? That's insane.

Then there’s the backyard grill burger... with the uneven char because carcinogens are flavor, maybe a little pink in the middle, but perfect because it’s yours and you created it.

The Great Burger Debate: Toppings That Divide Us

Of course, the toppings are a whole other fight. American vs cheddar cheese, lettuce and tomato? Onions? I like bacon on mine, occasionally a fried egg. Pickles too, though I had one recently with pickled jalapenos, it was awesome. Then there’s always one guy insisting a veggie burger counts.

It doesn’t, but at least they have the spirit.

So today, whether you’re firing up your own grill or giving in to fast food, here are the best deals you'll find.
