The winter months are upon us and that usually comes with an increase in cold gray days. Cloudy days have always made me feel like getting cozy and taking a nap, and I'm sure I'm not alone. But why does overcast weather have such an effect?

It turns out that there is science behind it. I came across Abstract Fitness which has an article explaining the different reasons behind the phenomenon. Let's shine a light on the mystery.

First, the lack of sunlight on a cloudy day can disrupt our circadian rhythm. That's the internal process that regulates our sleep-wake cycle. Sunlight plays a huge role in letting our bodies know when it's time to be awake. When the sky is gray, and there's less light, our bodies tend to produce more melatonin, the hormone responsible for making us feel sleepy. Our brain gets the message that it's time to rest, even if it's the middle of the day.

Another factor is the psychological effect of cloudy weather. There's just something about a gray, overcast sky that can make the world feel more laid back and less stimulating. The lack of colors and sunlight can lead to a decrease in serotonin, a mood-regulating neurotransmitter that also affects feeling awake. This drop in serotonin can lead to a desire to nap.

Yet another reason is that we might be less inclined to be active and spend time outdoors when it's cloudy. Physical activity can boost energy levels and reduce fatigue, so a lack of it can contribute to sleepiness. We're more likely to stay indoors and engage in low-energy activities which can add to feeling tired.

So, there it is. Cloudy weather can make us feel sleepier due to a combination of disrupted circadian rhythms, psychological effects, and a decrease in physical activity. The next time you find yourself yawning on a cloudy day, know that there are several scientific reasons behind what you're feeling. Why not treat yourself to that nap?
