Remember This Iconic Oklahoma Playground? Look Out For The New Updates Replacing It
Most of us remember the fantasy-like playgrounds scattered around Oklahoma where swarms of children have played for decades. This iconic look is getting a whole new look, replacing what used to be the classic "Kids Zone" we all know and love.
Out With The Old & In With The New Kids Zone in Oklahoma
Generations of families have been making memories at the old Kids Zone playground, also known as Greer Park, in Lawton, Oklahoma. Recently, though, the City of Lawton announced that they're looking to revamp some of the play areas to "better meet the needs of [their] families."
Where most of us remember climbing across the ropes course or magically speaking to one another using the intercom speakers randomly scattered throughout the castle, kids who see the playground after the renovations will have an entirely new experience.
Construction on the new play area starts on Tuesday, March 4, and the park will be closed to visitors. Luckily, the renovations shouldn't take long and should be finished by mid-June of 2025.
The southwest Oklahoma community has been craving a much needed makeover for the playground for years, but changing the look of the original playground is completely different than just fixing broken parts.
Bittersweet News For Generations of Lawtonians

Luckily, based on some of the answers from the City of Lawton in the comments on their announcement on their public Facebook page, not everything will change for Greer Park.
Some community members are feeling bittersweet about the news, mentioning that they're sad to see some of their own memories being torn apart with the renovations.
Comments have been edited for clarity.
One Lawtonian recalled "my name [is] on one of the fence post[s] from early elementary. Sad to see it go. Glad for upgrading though."
Renovations Only Affecting Specific Area of Greer Park
Another community member asked the City of Lawton through a Facebook comment if the black tiles and bricks with names and dates would be coming down with the renovation. Luckily, Lawton's city staff reassured the commentor that the only thing coming down with the construction is the wooden playground.
Specifically, the play unit within the park is the only part being torn down. In it's place will be a "world-class facility" with resurfaced areas and more.
The new look is definitely unique and much different from the current "Kids Zone" we've all known for so long.
