27 years ago, a group of Parkies in Medicine Park, Oklahoma saw a video of folks jumping in the freezing water on the internet. After watching the fun, they decided they wanted to do something just like it right here at home. From then on, the tradition of the annual Polar Plunge was born. And it's happening again Saturday, Feb. 1.

The Polar Plunge sounds exactly like what the event is all about. Folks from all over Oklahoma travel to the tiny town, dress in their best goofy costumes and swimwear and plunge into the water at Bath Lake.

Some say it's great for your health and your heart, others say it's just a great change from the dreary, pent up winter months in Oklahoma.

Temps For The Day Make It One Of The Warmest Plunges Yet

This year's Polar Plunge is more than likely going to be one of the warmest ever,  with highs currently set for low or mid 70s and nothing but sunny skies. Now, the water is a totally different thing - it's going to be cold no matter what. But at least it isn't literally frozen, like in years past.

You also don't have to jump to participate in the event. You can be one of the sideline cheerleaders to encourage jumpers from wussing out at the last minute.

But if you are a jumper, here's the run down of events that you'll need to be there for.

Brief Rundown Of The Annual Polar Plunge Parade And Big Jump

If you're planning on attending the annual Medicine Park Polar Plunge, here's what you should know:

  • Everyone should meet at the Park Tavern by 1:30 p.m. The Tavern is a 21 and up bar with outdoor seating, but the all ages concert area is just beside the Tavern.
  • The parade to Bath Lake should happen promptly at 2:00 p.m.
  • The plunge is happening right after the parade.
  • No matter the conditions, they will jump.

Usually, one of the original Parkies who took the very first plunge, "Santa" Charlie Wright, is the one to lead the parade and stay in the water the longest nearly every year. For this year's plunge, however, Santa Charlie may be steering things from the backseat.

We've reached out to Charlie for confirmation, but have not yet received a response.

The Plunge Isn't The Only Thing To Look Forward To In Medicine Park

After the plunge, everyone usually takes a trip back down to the Park Tavern to warm back up, or back to their rentals for the weekend to change.

Then, the entire town comes alive with entertainment, novelty shops and specials and one heck of a getaway in southwest Oklahoma.

Golf carts might be a great rental to consider when you realize just how much there is for you to explore and enjoy.
