Overall, Oklahoma is seen as a "flyover state" with not much to offer for entertainment or special stops when traveling. So why would people want to live here? Out of all the towns in the state, one southwest Oklahoma town has been listed on a recent study as a town people are flocking to this year.

How The Study Works

The folks at moveBuddha came out with a study naming college towns in the United States people are flocking to. They considered factors like:

  • Unemployment
  • Affordability
  • In and out searches

The college towns listed either had low unemployment rates, high affordability or "in-to-out move ratio greater than 1.25, meaning that these towns earned a significantly higher volume of searches for moves in than out (Moving Cost Calculator)."

According to research, Lawton, Oklahoma ranks as the most affordable college town in the entire country, with homes averaging $129,000.

Surprisingly, Lawton ranks above Oklahoma's more prestigious college towns like Stillwater, Norman, Weatherford, or Oklahoma City. But when you think about it, Cameron University is the university most known for affordability.

Perhaps that's why this year, Cameron saw a spike in enrollment. Nearly 4% more students enrolled this year compared to last year's numbers.

Why Do People Want To Live in Oklahoma?

Despite the stereotypes, Oklahoma does have some good things to appreciate (besides affordability). For instance, our state fairs are both in the top 10 for the best in the country.

When the weather is good here, it really is good. Overall, most people are friendly to deal with if you're not on the road.

One of Oklahoma's best characteristics is the variety of opportunities. Depending on the area of the state you're in, you could either have a peaceful life far away from other folks or you could be right next door to party central.
