Tornado Season: Crazy Items Found After Powerful Tornado
In the ranking for tornado activity, Oklahoma actually sits low on the list, with Texas, Mississippi, Kansas and Alabama having more activity in previous years. That being said - Oklahoma is still home of the widest tornado and the tornado with the strongest winds. And with the wind and rain comes some... very odd items. Here are a few strange or uncommon items that have been found after a tornado.
Veteran Cards, Bibles and More
Tornados that tore through Kentucky December of 2021 left families devastated with 88 losses and items flying as far as 130 miles away. During the aftermath, posts flooded social media with people finding things like a 1993 Veterans of Foreign Wars card, a giant print edition of the Holy Bible, and even a sixteen dollar check that landed about 85 miles from where it came from.
A Neck Tie Rack With The Ties Still Attached
The Great Bend tornado was one of the most violent tornadoes in Kansas history. It is still known as the latest occurrence of a tornado in their year, ripping through the state in November 1915. It could only be seen by lightning flashes and claimed many lives that day. However, people from 40 miles away received a delivery in the form of a necktie rack with 10 ties still attached. Without the oddity, no one that distance would've known about the disaster.
To this day, the Great Bend tornado has the most oddities associated with it, including an iron water hydrant with splinters in it. In 1915, there weren't ways to get exact measurements of wind speed, but we can agree that wind strong enough to run piece of wood through iron is unimaginably strong.
This one didn't make it into a yard; instead it remained right where it was left - on a counter in the middle of a home demolished from a tornado in Laurel, Mississippi that swept through an an Easter Sunday. Remarkably the cake stayed untouched and in near perfect condition in a glass container after the tornado took everything else in the home out.
It's safe to say that tornados are no laughing matter. But the aftermath can be a healing experience, hopefully encouraging people to cherish the things left behind. If you've ever found an oddity in your yard after a tornado, share your story with us on our app!
