Forecast: Oklahoma in for a Halloween Tornado Outbreak?

As we rolled toward the end of summer 2023, the extended forecast every weather outlook gave didn't look as seasonally mild as we all hoped.

We were glad to see that we would actually experience a cooler fall across the Sooner State, but it also came with grim warnings of potentially severe weather. A second spring if you will.

According to the latest forecast, there's a chance those severe odds will impact most of the state. Tornadoes, hail, winds, and large amounts of rain.

But it's too late in the year for tornadoes!

Not at all. The weather can and has produced tornadoes on just about every day of the year in our historical almanac, even during the week between Christmas and New Year's. While we generally have to take any forecast with a grain of salt, due to the news outlets constantly trying to rake in the ratings through sensationalizing moments like this, just about every outlet that has nothing to gain from a forecast like this is warning the public of what could happen. All in all, meteorologists universally agree that Oklahoma is in for a very wet week, and while they all seem to agree that there is the "potential" for severe weather, some warnings are more fervent than others.

I'm not sure what the weather has done to your part of the Sooner State this year, but down in Southwest Oklahoma, while the rains are welcome, we're still recovering from our one-two double hailstorm punch last June.

What if they're wrong about the severe risks?

That's a best-case scenario. Nobody ever faults the meteorologists for constantly being wrong. That's the nature of predicting the future, you really never know.

Hopefully we'll all get the rain we so desperately need and nothing else. Maybe it'll even clear up by the 31st so every Oklahoma kid can enjoy a little candy-gathering mischief.
