Oklahoma has been teasing us with these warm January days. I love to keep garden beds here at the station and at home, so all this sunshine makes me want to get my hands dirty and plant some beautiful flowers!

But I know it's way too early to to do this, even though spring has sprung in every store around town. So before I start sowing seeds, I need to wait for Oklahoma to have its last frost of the year.

According to The Old Farmer's Almanac, it's important to wait to plant your seeds or young plants after the last frost date because these are more susceptible to a freeze. And you don't want all your hard work to go to waste!

If you're like me and you mostly plant flowers, you'll want to wait to plant your perennial and annuals either on the last frost date or a few weeks after depending on the type of flower. Now if you like planting bulbs, then you'll want to plant your summer-flowering bulbs a few weeks after the last frost. (Spring-flowering bulbs should be planted in the fall, a few weeks before the first frost.)

So when will Oklahoma see its last frost?

The Old Farmer's Almanac is predicting that Lawton, Oklahoma, will receive its last frost of the season on April 7. So we still have a few more months before we can start getting down and dirty in our flower beds!

It looks like we'll have about 206 days of the growing season with the first frost being predicted for October 31.
