Oklahoma Ranks Among Top 20 States With Most Motorcycle Accidents
The Oklahoma City Police Department is encouraging drivers in Oklahoma to be more cautious now that we've hit motorcycle season. As the year warms up, more bikes are likely to hit the roads and it's important that cars aren't hitting them. While it may seem common sense to pay closer attention to motorcycle drivers on the roads, Oklahoma seems to struggle with maintaining a safe driving experience for everyone.
According to a 2025 study from Caruso Law Office, Oklahoma ranks #17 in the nation for safety risks for motorcycle drivers. Between 2020 and 2022, Oklahoma saw 489 fatal wrecks within a three year time period. Unfortunately, the changes seem to be getting worse for Oklahomans, with a -1% change in fatal wrecks within the three year time period.
Although the Oklahoma City Police Department may have made the announcement, all of Oklahoma could benefit from the helpful tips to keep others safe.
Helpful hints to keep car and motorcycle drivers safe on the roads.
According to their suggestions, drivers should:
- Check your mirrors more often, especially before moving to another lane or making a turn.
- Remember to use turn signals.
- Give motorcycles a full lane. Although lane splitting is illegal in Oklahoma, it is still wise to be careful that riders who are unaware of the law may do so out of ignorance. Drivers should still continue safe driving practices.
- Stay alert and avoid distractions.
