The American Women Quarters Program of the U.S. Mint has announced that Oklahoma's own Maria Tallchief has been selected and will be one of the women featured on next year's (2023) American Women Quarters. The four-year program that started this year (2022) features five women annually that are honored and celebrated for their accomplishments and importance in American history. Their image will be placed on the reverse side of the U.S. Quarter as a special limited edition coin. So keep your eyes out for a 2023 Elizabeth Marie Tallchief quarter for your collection. If you're unfamiliar with who Elizabeth Maria Tallchief is she was the very first major American prima ballerina. She is also the very first Native American (Osage Nation) to hold the rank of a prima ballerina. She was born in Fairfax, Oklahoma in 1925 and eventually moved to New York and became the first star of the New York Ballet. Marie Tallchief was known for her incredible athleticism, grace, and passion. She's credited for revolutionizing ballet. Hit play on the video below to see her perform at the Kennedy Center.

Maria Tallchief will always be remembered as one of the greatest prima ballerinas of all time and her contributions to not only ballet, but U.S. womens' history is tremendous. She was inducted into the National Women's Hall of Fame and received a National Medal of Arts. She also received a Kennedy Center Honor for lifetime achievements. Now she'll be featured and honored with the 2023 American Women Quarters.
