There was no shortage of birthday tributes to Paul McCartney on Monday. On ‘Late Night With Jimmy Fallon,’ Fiona Apple chose to sing his 1973 song ‘Let Me Roll It’ instead of one from her new ‘The Idler Wheel’ album as a way of honoring McCartney.

Fallon’s house band the Roots backed up Apple, who stayed true to the original recording by McCartney and Wings. In fact her version was even more stripped down than the already bare bones original. Jimmy Fallon jumped in to help sing the final chorus, bringing some smiles and levity to a moody performance.

Apple isn’t the first to cover the song, she’s not even the first to cover it this month. On June 5, the Melvins released their ‘Freak Puke’ album which features a louder and more rock and roll version of ‘Let Me Roll It.’

Earlier in the day, Soundgarden‘s Chris Cornell also paid tribute to McCartney by singing an acoustic version of ‘A Day in the Life‘ during a show in London.
