A strange thing happened during the production of 'The Amazing Spider-Man 2.' Shailene Woodley was cast in the small role of Mary Jane Watson, AKA, the love of Peter Parker's life, but the part was completely excised in post-production for reasons that remain nebulous. Although she will not be appearing in the second film of the rebooted superhero franchise, some have wondered if she would be brought back for the inevitable third and fourth films ... and now we have an answer.

In the fewest words possible, the answer is "probably not."

Speaking with MTV, the star of 'The Spectacular Now' and the upcoming 'Divergent' was pretty straightforward about the situation, saying that her upcoming workload would probably keep her away from the Spider-Man universe for the foreseeable future. Here's her full quote:

"I don't know anything, but seeing as how they picked up the next two Divergent films, I don't know how I'd keep my sanity with two big action films in one year ... But anything can happen..."

To us, that sounds like the nice way of saying "I'm too busy preparing to become the next Jennifer Lawrence to make time for your little superhero franchise," but she does leave the door open in case the right number is written on a check. And you know what? Woodley is too good for these particular Spider-Man movies anyway. She's too talented to play second fiddle to a bunch of dudes and we'd much rather see her off doing her own thing. After all, she's heading up her own personal franchise now and if 'Divergent' has a fraction of the success of 'The Hunger Games,' she'll be set.

We imagine that we'll soon be hearing rumblings about a new Mary Jane being cast. In the meantime, 'The Amazing Spider-Man 2' opens on May 2, 2014 and 'Divergent' opens on March 21, 2014.
