Oklahoma's School for the Deaf just opened their registration for anyone wanting to learn American Sign Language (ASL) both I and II this spring. And unlike any other college courses, these are free if you register with them before February 6. The best part about these classes is that they're held online and you can take them at your own pace.

Why Should You Learn ASL?

Sign language isn't incredibly popular in Oklahoma, but it could definitely come in handy when (or if) you run into someone with hearing disabilities. In Oklahoma, around 5.3% of people live with hearing imparements, which is actually about 207,900 people. That's more people than there are in the entire city of Norman.

Not only is it helpful, but sign language is a bit of a commidity in Oklahoma. If you decide to pursue becoming a Sign Language Intrepreter as a career, there are places seeking that position right now. Zipcruiter says that, on average, a Sign Language Interpreter makes around $60,678 year in Oklahoma.

Many of the job offers currently looking for someone like this are for colleges, universities, and even for the State of Oklahoma. So you're probably looking at a well-paying job with long term benefits if you decide to head down this career path. But keep in mind - these classes are only the start.

What Classes Can You Take Free?

The classes they're teaching are taught by ASL specialists and designed for folks with little to no knowledge about sign language. If you're more experienced with ASL, the II program is more expanded and advanced to help enhance your skills and practice.

The lessons include five and a half hours of content, 38 lessons and all of which you'll be able to take the course at your own pace. Now is the time to sign up for free - the courses don't start until February 3, 2025 and will close again on May 30. Unfortunately, these are not classes that can certify you as an interpreter, but can introduce you to the process and see if the career may be something you're passionate about.

Have The Classes Really Helped Before?

Folks who've taken the course from before have had nothing but great things to say about the experience. One Facebook user wrote on the announcement post: "I have taken classes from the school and they are far above their worth and exceeded my expectations. VERY in depth. I hope that y'all will continue to provide this service. Thank you OSD!!"
