UPDATE 10-22-25 10:50 a.m. - The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has confirmed that SNAP Benefits will be suspended on November 1, 2025 due to the government shutdown. Continue below to find local organizations who may be able to help families in need.

A prolonged government shutdown could leave families without Supplement Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits next month, with Oklahoma among the top ten states most affected by this potential shortfall.

We hope for a quick resolution. But, in the case that it doesn't come soon enough, there are at least three places in southwest Oklahoma that families can go to receive help.

For families that may not have access to SNAP benefits next month, here are three places in Lawton, Oklahoma, that can help offset the need until things are back to normal. Bear in mind that these places rely on volunteers and donations, so if you are considering giving back, now would be the time to do it.

While they are most known for serving free meals to the homeless and veterans in our community, Hungry Hearts volunteers have also been known to help provide resources and groceries, if possible.

They do take donations for:

  • Fruits, veggies, non-perishable, and perishable foods
  • Plastic and paper products like Ziploc baggies, paper towels, etc.
  • Cleaning products
  • Weather-based needs such as sunscreen, bug spray, raincoats, blankets, etc.

The Hungry Hearts Feeding Ministry does not require registration or proof of income, and they do not limit how many people in a household can receive help. The 501 (c)(3) ministry is volunteer-ran and constantly in need of extra hands to help serve food.

They've already been busy giving back to families directly affected by the government shutdown and they're willing to continue to do so. The volunteers at the Lawton Food Bank serve anyone who lives in Oklahoma and has an address in the state.

They also heavily rely on donations, preferably non-perishable foods and things that have a long-lasting shelf life, such as noodles and canned goods.

Families who qualify to receive help must follow certain eligibility requirements, but they do host special events from time to time that can help families who may not fit those requirements.

Salvation Army Food Distribution Center - 1306 SW E Ave., Lawton, Oklahoma

The Salvation Army Food Distribution Center helps fight against hunger here in the Lawton community routinely. They can also provide boxes of food to families in need, not just those who come in to receive a meal at their nightly service.

The Lawton Salvation Army office is also fortunate enough to have a mobile feeding unit that "allows us to respond at a moment's notice should disaster strike our community," per their website.

They also have two other locations, the Thrift Shop and the Community Services Center, that can provide other resources like cheap and affordable clothing.
