We’re so close, guys. So close to the end of summer movie season and the start of the fall, when the weather cools down and the movies start to get interesting again. I don’t know that The Girl on the Train is going to be an awards contender, but it certainly looks like a juicy thriller.

Emily Blunt stars in this adaptation of the runaway (I’ll be here all week! Tip your waiters!) bestseller about a woman who witnesses a crime, and then becomes a suspect. The cast is amazing: Luke Evans, Justin Theroux, Haley Bennett, Edgar Ramirez, Lisa Kudrow, Allison Janney, and Mission: Impossible’s Rebecca Ferguson. If you’re not familiar with the novel by Erin Cressida Wilson (who also wrote the screenplay for the movie Secretary), here’s the official synopsis:

In the thriller, Rachel (Blunt), who is devastated by her recent divorce, spends her daily commute fantasizing about the seemingly perfect couple who live in a house that her train passes every day, until one morning she sees something shocking happen there and becomes entangled in the mystery that unfolds.

This doesn’t really look like a “Tate Taylor film.” He’s the guy who directed The Help and then made the unusual James Brown biopic Get On Up. As has been noted so many times already, this looks a lot more like a David Fincher movie (specifically the David Fincher movie that was also about sin and murder and infidelity and suburbia and abuse and girls who are gone). But with that cast and story, I’m intrigued. The Girl on the Train opens in theaters on October 7.
