A Tulsa, OK mother  was shot and killed by her 3-year-old son on Monday, after the toddler picked up a handgun as it discharged, causing a fatal wound to her head.

The death of Christa Engles, an Army veteran and active reservist, is being ruled an accident by Tulsa Police. The 26-year-old victim was transported to St. John Hospital in Tulsa and was pronounced dead at 5:38pm. Sgt. Dave Walker of the Tulsa Police Dept. said Engles was shot with a semiautomatic handgun while apparently changing her 1-year-old’s diaper.

After she was shot by her toddler, Tulsa Police added that the 3-year-old tried to run from the home to avoid his grandmother, who discovered Engles body. In an interview with child specialists, the boy “confirmed what the evidence led investigators to assume,” Walker said. Investigators are calling it a “horrible, horrible accident.”

Investigators said that there was a lot of guns in the house. Police say Christa Engles’ 9 mm Springfield handgun was in a holster, and she set it on a nightstand while she turned her back to change her daughter’s diaper on the couch.

Investigators say her little boy somehow picked it up and fired it, hitting Engles in the head.
