Usefull Tips on How to Feed & Attract Hummingbirds!

If you haven't already, now is the time to hang the hummingbird feeders. According to the Oklahoma Department Of Wildlife Conservation, hummers are seen beginning in early April. I have two hummingbird feeders on my front porch and it's fun to watch them fly to the feeders and then chirp and squeal and chase each other off.

According to Rachel Bradley, wildlife diversity specialist for the Wildlife Department, it's fairly simple to attract hummingbirds to your feeder.

"Hummingbirds take to sugar water mixtures (one part sugar to four parts water) in a hummingbird feeder and bright, tubular plants such as trumpet creeper vines and petunias," Bradley said.

As long as your feeder has red on it, it is not necessary to use red food coloring in the sugar water mixture. Be sure to clean your feeder about every five days in cool weather and every two to three days in warm weather.

Hummingbirds are also attracted to bee balm, salvia, trumpet vines, lobelia, phlox, four o'clock and penstemons. They like plants with vibrant colors.
