Usually, volunteer opportunities don't last for a long while. But this one of a kind opportunity gives you a chance to spend three to six months in Oklahoma's Wichita Mountain Wildlife Refuge. And it's not all just volunteer work - many of your expenses will be reimbursed when you wrap up your experience.

Oklahoma's Fish and Wildlife Service recently announced openings for Campground Hosts during 2025 at some of the Wildlife Refuge's campgrounds near Indiahoma, Oklahoma.

Some things they'll be asking of you as a "Campground Host" include:

  • Provide customer service to campers
  • Check campers in and out of camprgrounds
  • Make sure bathrooms and campsites are kept clean and neat.
  • Educate campers regarding campground policies, recreational opportunities and natural/cultural resources

Don't worry if you don't know much of the policies or may not be super familiar with the refuge campgrounds, there is training included with the opportunity. That first week, the staff will walk you through all you need to know to make the camping experience at the Wildlife Refuge a positive one for everyone.

Although the position is for volunteers, there are some requirements that anyone applying must have in order to get the position. Applicants must have a drivers license, have Defensive Driver Training, be able to lift 30 pounds, pass a background check and be able to work 32 hours per week. The Refuge personel will also provide the volunteer uniform that will need to be worn for the job.

While you're out there, you'll be enjoying nature at it's finest with little to no cell service, so no worries about being bombarded with phone calls and texts from others. Your propane and utilities will be reuimbursed and you'll be able to use one of the provided vehicles to do Campground Host duties.
