It's no secret that in the Oklahoma heat, the one thing that is probably more valuable than water is the air conditioning. As much as we hate to hear that the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge Visitors Center will have to be closed for such a long time, it's relieving to hear that they'll be getting a new HVAC system to improve the experience for visitors later this year.

The improvement will be useful for the winter months, as well, since the refuge is open all year long.

While this center may be closed, there are still a few museums in the Lawton area that are worth visiting that will most certainly highlight the Wichitas and their history to southwest Oklahoma.

The Visitors Center near the Quannah Parker Dam will be closed for the tail end of the summer.

Per an announcement via social media, the Visitors Center for the Wichitas will be closed starting July 28 until September 8.

While their main exhibits will be closed, they will be moving the Friends of the Wichitas Nature Store and Visitors Center Operations to the new Headquarters building. The new Headquarters will be open to the public on August 2.

While it might be September before they're back open again, keep in mind that temperatures seem to stay a steady 80-90 degrees or more until late September, early October in Oklahoma. Needless to say, the new system and condition will be a welcome surprise for guests.

While the Wichitas help connect Lawton, Medicine Park, Altus, Cache and Indiahoma, there's a special highlight about the Wichitas in the Great Plains Museum at 601 NW Ferris Avenue here in Lawton.

Visitors can also learn more about the area's history with the military, especially much of the refuge is currently used for military training, at the Fort Sill National Landmark and Historic Museum.
