Whether you're a history buff or a foodie, you'll appreciate all of the effort that goes into events like the free Chuckwagon Gathering being hosted on Saturday, March 29 in Kingfisher, Oklahoma. It's not just about the freshly cooked food, but about experiencing a little of how life was like for Oklahomans back in the day.

From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., cowboys and cooks will be serving up food samples while offering cooking demonstrations, as well. The event will also include live music and fun activities for all ages. Again, the experience is completely free and is being hosted at The Chisholm Museum in Kingfisher, Oklahoma.

What a typical chuckwagon gathering in Oklahoma looks like.

Chuck wagons were known as the "hub of the camp" for cowboys back in the day. Today, we still use chuck wagons to enjoy authentic cowboy cooking, which is usually some variation of chili, beans, cornbread, stew and maybe even some cobbler.

While enjoying the food, guests are usually treated to some form of entertainment, just like when cowboys used to relax and entertain themselves around the campfires back in the day.

If you're looking for a chuck wagon event near you, most rural communities in Oklahoma host their own chuck wagon themed events.

Annual Chuck Wagon Festival hosted in Oklahoma City coming this May.

Every year, the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City hosts one of the largest Chuck Wagon Festivals in the state. This year, they'll be putting on the event on Saturday, May 24 and Sunday, May 25.

Guests will have a chance to enjoy authentic cowboy cooking from several chuck wagons and Native American food samples, as well.

They'll even have other pieces of history set up and ready for visitors to check out, such as a pioneer village with interactive natural history displays and a Liichokoshkomo’, the Museum’s interactive outdoor addition.
