Congress Voting to Decriminalize Marijuana
Today's the day (12-04-20) that marijuana could become legal across all 50 states. Congress will be voting on the MORES Act (Marijuana Opportunity Reinvestment and Expungement Act) that would decriminalize cannabis Nationwide. This will be the first bill that Congress has officially addressed and voted on concerning the legalization of marijuana since it became illegal back in 1930.
As more and more states across the country legalize marijuana in some form or another, for medical or recreational use, it's was only a matter of time before the Federal Government stepped in and had a say. Around 15 states so far have amended their laws regarding the use and possession of cannabis. In Oklahoma we have medical marijuana and have already started the process of full legalization.
So what all does the MORES Act do? First it completely decriminalizes marijuana and removes it from the current Schedule 1 drug classification. It would also address current and previous marijuana related crimes. Basically the MORES Act would provide an expungement for prior non-violent marijuana convictions.
The bill also includes taxation at 5% on all cannabis products to fund various social and criminal reform projects and agencies like the OCJ (Office of Cannabis Justice). The revenues collected would also help fund various grant programs and other projects as well. It would also make dispensaries or really any business related to cannabis just like any other small business. The bill will also address Federal benefits and rights that can't be denied based on the use of marijuana.
So what are your thoughts about all this? Do you think the Federal Government should decriminalize cannabis Nationwide, should marijuana be completely legal? Take the poll below and let us know your opinion.
