They say the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. Every year, Oklahomans have a good idea of what to do when winter is making it's way out and spring takes its place. Yet, we find ourselves making the same mistake every year that, according to recent research, is costing us more money than anything else we do when prepping for the new season.

Each spring, we all remember to move our clocks forward for one of the biggest adjustments of the year: daylight savings time. Yet, there are a few more changes we seem to forget to make; one of which would save us literal hundreds of dollars if we'd simply push a button.

According to research from Payless Power, the costliest mistake that Oklahomans make when Daylight Savings Time arrives is forgetting to change the winter settings on their thermostats.

According to Brandon Young, CEO and Energy Expert at Payless Power, this mistake is made far too often. "Most thermostats automatically adjust when it’s sunny or dark, yet never get it just right when daylight savings kicks in. If your system is still set to work during winter hours, you may be cooling or heating unnecessarily," he said.

Simply changing the thermostat to proper settings for the season can save Oklahomans the heating costs up to 10%, or $100 to $200 per year.

A few other adjustments that are also costing Oklahomans money during the spring time change are items like outdoor lighting and leaving electricity running longer and overnight.

Payless Power suggests that Oklahomans should rely on natural means of lighting the room or cooling an area rather than electricity to do the work. They also suggest opting for solar powered outdoor lighting instead of electrically powered outdoor lights.
