Winter weather is headed our way and that means many folks are going to have to decide whether or not being out on the road is worth the risk. Even if you aren't from the sooner state and are a bit more inclined on how to drive on ice, there are certain areas of the state you should avoid completely - with or without experience.

Can You Really Blame Oklahoma Drivers?

To play the devil's advocate here (and to admit poor driving on my part, as well) - Oklahoma hardly ever sees extreme winter weather. When it does hit, most of the time it doesn't last long enough to force folks to travel in dangerous conditions.

Which means it makes sense that icy or snowy roads tend to cause a lot of chaos with drivers. For instance, last January brought freezing rain like what we're expecting over this weekend.

The Oklahoma City metro areas saw so many accidents after an overnight ice storm that local law enforcement eventually stopped responding to accidents that morning until the weather subsided.

Historically, Oklahoma has seen the worst accidents due to winter weather between December and February. For instance, between December 9 and December 11, 2007, an ice storm cam through and caused the governor to declare a state of emergency. This storm took the lives of 27 people and caused an enormous amount of power outages for much of the state.

Luckily, a storm that catastrophic isn't predicted for this weekend, but that doesn't discount the fact that winter weather around here isn't to be taken lightly.

What Makes Roads Dangerous In Winter Weather?

This year, if you're planning on driving during inclimement weather, you can probably get away with traveling on well-maintained roads that don't have a lot of traffic normally. After all, the ice on the road isn't the only thing that makes a road dangerous. But you don't want to be on:

  • heavily trafficked roads
  • roads not prepared for ice
  • roads with poor conditions like pot holes, poor visibility, etc.
  • areas that are known for frequent accidents

When you take these things into account, you can probably see why these are some of the most dangerous roads to be on with incliment weather ahead.

Oklahoma's Dangerous Roads To Travel During Incliment Weather

Put incliment weather, drivers without much experience driving in icy conditions, winding roads and some poor maintenance issues together and you get a disaster waiting to happen.
