Once again a legal topic was brought up at the water cooler this morning. Somehow the topic of knives came up and the question was asked after seeing a switchblade, "Is that legal to own and carry in Oklahoma?"

This person took some convincing that they're legal and it wasn't until Google searches and official government websites were consulted that they finally believed it. Most people just assume they're illegal.

To be fair in some states and cities they're illegal. A lot of these places not only prohibit automatic knives they also restrict any quick and easy-to-open knives such as gravity and Balisong AKA Butterfly knives.

In the great state of Oklahoma, it is legal to own and carry switchblades and/or any other form of automatic knife. This includes gravity knives and the Balisong/Butterfly knife as well. But that wasn't always the case.

THE KNIFE LAWS IN OKLAHOMA WERE AMENDED IN 2015 TO LEGALIZE AUTOS

For a time it was illegal to carry switchblades and autos in Oklahoma. A law was passed in 1957 that prohibited them, but in 2015 the state laws were amended which legalized owning and carrying auto knives.
