The response to the SNAP benefits suspension in Oklahoma has been overwhelming to say the least. Say what you want about all of the things that may go wrong in this state - there's one thing we always get right: helping each other when we need it most.

For families who will not receive Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) Benefits on November 1, there are several places to go to receive food that can keep families afloat at least for the next month.

Food stamps funds from previous months will still be accessible after November 1, so families who have not used all of their money from before can still purchase food on the first. But these resources below will not require families to purchase food.

Lawton Food Bank receives generous donation to fuel families through November.

While the Lawton Food Bank had already made accomodations to help families in need after November 1, they were desperately asking for the community's help to supply enough food to last throughout the month.

Seeming since they've already been serving record numbers of families before November 1, they knew that continuing to help affected families would not be an easy task.

Luckily, the McMahon Foundation generously donated a $65,000 emergency grant to go towards purchasing food that could be distrubuted throughout November.

Lawton Farmers Market agrees to honor any and all tokens on November 1.

Usually, you need a particular token to purchase goods at the Farmers Market. However, in light of the SNAP Benefits situation, they've agreed to honor any and all tokens at the next Farmers Market.

According to a statement from the Lawton Farmers Market, there are approximately $18,000 worth of tokens that have been handed out and not used in the Lawton area.

"It doesn't matter how long you have had them, you can use them at this time," they said.

Any tokens, including:

  • wooden
  • red
  • orange
  • yellow
  • blue
  • purple
  • white
  • green

Tokens are purchased with EBT funds. If you have money that has rolled over from previous months left on your card, you should still be able to use your card to purchase goods, according to the Oklahoma Department of Human Services.

However, there will be no new distribution of funds, so if you do not have any money left over from previous months, your EBT card will not work.

The Lawton Farmers Market is meeting to discuss the matter on Wednesday, October 29, and we will update this post if any information is changed.

Hungry Hearts Feeding Ministry handing out meals for free in November.

Although they regularly hand out food and resources for the homeless and veterans in our community, the Hungry Hearts Feeding Ministry will be hosting a special Thanksgiving serving on Thursday, November 27 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

They are currently needing certain donations from the community to prepare for the event. In fact, many organizations are needing donations to help distribute to families in their area.
