The Most Important Thing Oklahoma Drivers Probably Know Nothing About
I never knew driving could be such a confusing thing for folks.
It must be, considering how much Oklahoma drivers have been struggling with things like going the speed limit in school zones or slowing down/moving over when there are emergency vehicles pulled over on the side of the road.
But if there's one thing that I've personally only ever heard of people talking about, but never knowing the actual scoop, it's the point system on our drivers licenses.
Oklahoma drivers can have their license suspended by getting 10 or more points on their license in 5 years.
If you have a license here in Oklahoma, then you abide by the same mandatory point system we all do. For every time you're given a violation, or a ticket or citation, you can receive points on your license.
According to Service Oklahoma, "When your point total on your driving record reaches ten (10) or more points within a five (5) year period your license is suspended."
In Oklahoma, you can get points on your license for things like:
- Reckless Driving (4 points)
- Failure to stop or remain stopped for a school bus loading or unloading (4 points)
- Speeding 25 mph or more over the posted speed limit (3 points)
- Speeding 1 - 25 mph over the posted speed limit (2 points)
The more severe the violation, the more points you can be given by the court clerk. Trust me when I say there are plenty more violations you could get points on your license for, 63 violations to be exact. Check out the full list here.
To find out how many points are on your license, call your local DMV.
Since I've received... a few... citations in my day, I decided to see how many points were on my own drivers license.
Contrary to popular belief, and to Google, I wasn't able to find this "website" or "link" to check my points on my own. But, after calling my local Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) , the staff was able to let me know I didn't have any points currently on my license.
Even if I did, there are ways I could get those points removed, just like anyone else can. All it requires is time and a little dime, depending on your situation.

According to the Oklahoma Department of Motor Vehicles, drivers can get points reduced by going "twelve (12) consecutive months without being convicted of any pointable violation, two (2) points are removed from the accumulated points on their driving record."
If you're able to make it three consecutive years without getting any pointable violations, you can actually have the point levels reduced completely to zero.
You can also opt to take an Oklahoma-approved Defensive Driving Course, which can deduct 2 points from your record once every 24 months.
Now's about the time I think we all thank the officers who've used discretion to cut us a break. Seriously - THANK YOU.
