We're hardly into December and babies are still popping up at the Oklahoma City Zoo. So far this year, they've already seen at least eight births at the OKC Zoo. And, as of November 2025, they are celebrating another new arrival.

Just after Thanksgiving, on November 29, 2025, they welcomed Lyra, a new female zebra plains foal. Lyra weighed an astonishing 97 pounds at birth and has already met some important milestones for her age.

Here's the plans for the new foal since winter has arrived in Oklahoma.

New zebra foal joins zebra family, despite cold temperatures in the sooner state.

Lyra, named after the second century astronomer, Ptolemy, is already strong enough to be integrated with her zebra family at the zoo. She's hard to miss among the dazzle of plains zebras in the Expedition Africa exhibit.

“It’s always exciting to welcome a new member to our animal family,” said Dr. Dwight Lawson, Executive Director and CEO of the OKC Zoo. “Not only is little Lyra a delight to see for our guests, it’s also a reminder of the important work of zoos in preserving and perpetuating wildlife for future generations.”

Although the zebras are well accustomed to Oklahoma temperatures, and already receive appropriate care in the evenings, the zoo staff takes extra care for Lyra. According to Candice Rennels, the Director of Public Relations, she confirmed that "if it's 40 degrees and warmer, Lyra and the herd have access to their outdoor habitat."

Will the OKC Zoo have any other babies born before the end of the year?

Since the start of the year, the OKC Zoo has had over 8 births, including:

  • Four lesser hedgehog tenrecs born on May 23, 2025.
  • Kidogo (key-doh-goh): Female African bat-eared fox born June 6, 2025.
  • Xerxes: First male Asian elephant calf born in the Zoo’s history! He was born on June 17, 2025.
  • Atlas: Male Plains zebra born on August 9, 2025
  • Unnamed Okapi calf (born 9/1): Female Okapi calf born August 24, 2025
  • Unnamed male Francois langur infant born September 8, 2025
  • We celebrated the birth of five Volcán Alcedo giant tortoises, species of Galapagos tortoises, July of 2024.
  • Julu's third calf, Kamili, was born Tuesday, September 23, 2025.

As of now, Lyra seems to be the last new arrival that they're expecting for the year. We are waiting for confirmation that no other animals are expecting a baby before end of 2025 and we will update the post if the infomation changes.

You can see all of the new critters at the OKC Zoo, along with the Safari Lights Experience. For tickets, hours, and more information, click here.
