Distracted driving has definitely been an issue in Oklahoma. While back in the day, we may have been distracted by "the cab light," there's one thing we all know for sure is recently causing problems on the road: cell phones. That's why starting November 1, there will be a new state law directly aimed at using cell phones in the car.

Officers in Oklahoma are taking to social media now to forewarn drivers that this state law is coming, so no one is caught off guard. However, because of the nature of the new law, drivers shouldn't expect to "catch a break" if they're caught breaking it.

Here's what you can expect starting at the beginning of November.

New state law prohibits drivers from holding cell phones in their hands in certain areas.

Driving in general, no doubt, should require all of our attention. Especially since vehicular deaths have risen 11.3% in the United States between 2019 and 2023. And the trend continues to climb. In Oklahoma specifically, vehicular accidents are one of the top three leading causes of death in the state.

But if there was anywhere that deserved our attention more than other places, it's construction zones and school zones. These areas can cause severe, deadly harm if drivers aren't careful.

That's why the new state law, starting November 1, will make it illegal for drivers to hold a cell phone in their hands within these two areas. Yes, it is illegal to be on your phone while driving; but, this law will prohibit drivers from holding phones, regardless of whether or not you're using it.

Drivers can still use hands-free methods to communicate - but the point is: no cell phones!

Community's reaction to the announcement from law enforcement.

A recent video of Oklahoma law enforcement informing viewers about the new law has definitely drawn some attention. Although several of the commenters were supportive, others explained how they saw the new law is "unfair," saying:

"Does that mean police, too?"

"I hope LEO follows this law, too."

"How about enforcing the law anytime people are driving and holding their cellphones! Not just school zones and construction zones."

Other commenters add that other similar laws have already been in place, yet drivers continue to drive recklessly. One man commented on the video:

"Outstanding. Any plans to enforce the distracted driving law that has been on the books for a few years now?"

It's no secret that driving in Oklahoma has been more dangerous over the years, and cell phones aren't helping the issue. How do you feel about the new law? Share your opinions with us on the app.
