Try These Five Oklahoma Margaritas For Cinco de Mayo
It's Cinco de Mayo! And us Oklahomans like to celebrate Mexico's victory over the French with margaritas and chips and queso. So we've rounded up five Oklahoma-inspired margaritas for Okies to enjoy this May 5.
According to History.com, Cinco de Mayo, or the fifth of May, celebrates the Mexican army's victory over the French during the Franco-Mexican War in the 1800s. Although it's a minor holiday in Mexico, Cinco de Mayo in the United States has "evolved into a commemoration of Mexican culture and heritage, particularly in areas with large Mexican-American populations."
All across Oklahoma, several Mexican food restaurants will be celebrating Cinco de Mayo with celebrations and specialty foods and drinks.
But if you're celebrating Cinco de Mayo at home, here's five Oklahoma-inspired margaritas!
If you're looking to spend Cinco de Mayo at home or a friend's house, you can celebrate Oklahoma style with these five Oklahoma margaritas!
Oklahoma Paloma
Now, we know, it's a paloma. But it has a tequila in it, so it counts as a margarita, right? This recipe is from Patron Tequila, and sounds refreshingly delicious: "citrus and herbal liqueur takes the classic flavors Paloma over the top in this summer variation."
Here's what you'll need:
- 1.5 oz Patron Silver
- .5 oz Citronge Orange Liqueur
- 3 oz Grapefruit Juice
- .5 oz Martini Bitter
Here's how you put it all together:
- Combine all ingredients into a shaker, add ice and shake
- Strain into a glass and top with grapefruit juice
- Garnish with a lime (You can also add Tajin around the rim for a little kick.)
Oklahoma Prairie Fire
Leave it to Oklahoma's famous redhead herself, the Pioneer Woman Ree Drummond, to come up with an Oklahoma-inspired margarita called "Oklahoma Prairie Fire." According to her website, "this mezcal-based cocktail is full of bold flavors."

- 2 oz Mezcal
- 1 oz Orange Juice
- 1 oz Blood Orange Juice
- 1 oz Fresh Lime, Plus Two Lime Wedges
- 1 oz Simple Syrup

- 4 to 6 Dashes of Orange Bitters
- Chili Powder, for the rim
- Kosher Salt, for the rim
Here's how you put it all together:
- Combine the first seven ingredients in a cocktail shaker, add ice and shake
- Combine equal parts chili powder and salt on a plate, run a lime wedge along the rim of your galls and dip it in the chili powder and salt mixture

Here's how you put it all together:
- Add the first four ingredients to a blender, pour the mixture into a resealable freezer bag and freeze until serving
- When ready to serve, run an orange wedge around the rim of a glass and dip into the orange sugar, then fill the glass with the frozen margarita mixture and garnish with an orange slice
Oklahoma Cooler Cocktail
While Googling "Oklahoma margaritas," we came across this recipe from CocktailBuilder.com, and even though it's not technically a margarita, it is made with vodka for our Okies who aren't a fan of tequila.
Here's what you need:
- 1.5 oz Melon Deoria Liqueur (or apple liqueur)
- 2 oz Cranberry Juice
- 1 oz Vodka
- 1 splash of 7-Up or Sprite
Here's how you put it all together:
- Pour in the first three ingredients into a glass
- Add the splash of 7-Up or Sprite and sir gently
- Garnish with a lime slice and maraschino cherry
Okie Oceanwater
Now this is one we made up while putting together this list. We're calling it an "Okie Oceanwater."
Here's what you need:
- An Oceanwater or Oceanwater Slush from Sonic, whichever and whatever size you prefer
- Your choice of tequila, vodka or rum
Here's how you make it:
- Pour the alcohol of your choice straight into your Sonic cup
