Royalty of the 4 Weirdest Things in Oklahoma
Festivals in Oklahoma are a big deal - especially when it comes to our royalty. We seem to love any excuse to crown someone, here are the weirdest things we've crowned a queen, king or marshall over in Oklahoma.
Watermelon Queen - Rush Springs, Oklahoma
If there was one celebration in Oklahoma known more for its queens than the event itself, it would probably the Rush Springs Watermelon Festival. Over the years, the queens of the Watermelon Festival have been traveling further and further from Rush Springs to make appearances and spread the word about the event.
This year's queen happened to be continuing a family tradition, following her grandfather's sister's running for queen in years past.
Strawberry Queen - Stilwell, Oklahoma
If you can't tell, we really love food in Oklahoma. We name towns after it and we crown people queens and kings of it, too. In Stilwell, Oklahoma, the annual Strawberry Festival is one of the largest events in the area, drawing people from everywhere to enjoy the best strawberry-related event in the state.
The Strawberry Festival also has a pageant, allowing ladies from the Stilwell community to run for Strawberry Queen, almost making them a local celebrity.
Cow Chip Marshall and Queen - Beaver, Oklahoma
Cow chip throwing is a serious, long-standing tradition in Beaver, Oklahoma. For those that don't know, cow chips (a.k.a. cow patties) are piles of dried cow poop.
Not only is this tradition a little strange to some, but the fact that we have a queen and marshall, instead of a king, of the Cow Chip Festival held every year. In fact, this year's nominations are still being taken right now until August. We'll see who wins when it comes festival time.
Kolache Royalty - Prague, Oklahoma
Talk about a LONG tradition! The Prague Kolache Festival has been a big deal since the very start, with queens going all the way back to 1951. They not only attend their own festival, but also others in surrounding towns, like when this year's royalty took a trip to the Blackberry Festival in McLoud, Oklahoma recently.
Royalty in this community is a big deal since it is one of the most notable ways this community highlights their Czech heritage. Queens now are able to earn a $1,500 scholarship, a crown, sash and opportunities to shine as the royalty they are.
Honestly, these opportunities are great ways to get the youth involved in their communities. They may be a little weird, but they're a great thing to celebrate in Oklahoma.
