Oklahoma has several theme parks around the state, but one of the busiest may be at risk for closing. Recent news from the owners of Six Flags has led people to believe that some parks may not make the cut for 2025. Could Oklahoma's be one of them?

Earlier this year, the Six Flags Entertainment Corporation completed a merger with Cedar Fair Entertainment, headquartered in Sandusky, Ohio. In the new company's first quarterly report, they described a long range plan called "Project Accelerate."

The project reviews each location in the Six Flags portfolio to help to determine "non-core assets" and "evaluate potentional divestiture," according to the Courier Post. Meaning: the review will help the corporation determine which parks are essential to their corporation and which should be sold or closed.

When the merger was announced back in 2023, the companies never intended on closing any parks. In an interview with the Oklahoman, Cedar Fair Entertainment spokeswoman Hayley Cook said that there were "no park closures are planned or contemplated at this time" and it sounds like they haven't changed their mind.

How Does Oklahoma's Location Compare To The Rest?

Oklahoma's Six Flags was originally owned by the Oklahoma City based Six Flags and Premier Park since it's start in 1958. In 2006, the company dropped the Oklahoma City location, but repurchased it years later.

Some folks really enjoy the Oklahoma City location, but some say that it doesn't compare to the larger parks across the country. According to limitlesspark.com, Oklahoma City's Frontier City ranked #15 on their list for the best Six Flags parks. They commented on the "lack of anything amazing," saying that the park really just "excels at having lots for younger kids to do."

Oklahoma's Frontier City, however, does rank in the top five best theme parks in the state overall. So, although it may not compare nationally, it seems to be doing more than a justifiable job for the entire sooner state.

As of right now, our Oklahoma City location seems safe where it's at, but if you really want to make sure it doesn't go anywhere: plan a trip there.

While there are a handful of things everyone knows about--OKC Zoo, Myriad Gardens, Bricktown, etc-- there are even more lesser-known places to experience one-of-a-kind Oklahomaness. Some things cost a little money, others are completely free, but it's all fun for the whole family.
