Another one of the "Interesting Facts" videos caught my attention ealier today. No, it wasn't because of the crazy AI footage of people pulling a diver from an oil well, but from the wild fact that I thought was untrue. Turns out, Oklahoma really is one of only two states in the U.S. that has an official state meal.

Yes, other states have state foods, like the Mississippi mud pie, but only Oklahoma and Louisiana have official meals. Skip the dinner plans you originally had and try out Oklahoma's official state meal. State Symbols USA shared the full list for the state meal, listing:

  • fried okra
  • cornbread
  • barbecue pork
  • squash
  • biscuits
  • sausage and gravy
  • grits
  • corn
  • strawberries (the state fruit)
  • chicken fried steak
  • pecan pie
  • black-eyed peas

Hopefully, you and your family are hungry because there's lots on this menu. You can actually serve the state "meal" as breakfast, lunch and dinner with a treat.

Why Does Oklahoma Have A State Meal?

You'll noticed that many of these foods have always done well in Oklahoma, that's why we have a ton of barbeque joints and southern cooking kitchens scattered across the state.

Oklahoma recognized these foods as part of the official meal back in 1988 because of their historical and cultural significance to the people who've lived here. Although some of the foods originally came from other countries, like okra, the folks at that time thought it would be important to recognize our roots; down to the very last black-eyed pea.
