Three Ways Oklahomans Can Get Their Turkey This Thanksgiving
Some places in the United States don't have the luxuries we do here in Oklahoma, especially when it comes to preparing for Thanksgiving.
Here, we have such a crazy climate and variety of hardworking people that we have more than one way to bring a turkey home for the holiday. We don't have to rely on the store, or hunting for food, to put a turkey of our choice on the dinner table.
Whether you value tradition over cost, or quick access over novelty, there's an option for everyone to find their own gobbler for the occasion without running out.
Oklahoma ranks as the least expensive state to buy Thankgiving turkey - is it worth it?
The holidays are one of the most difficult times to keep money in the bank, so it helps to save money wherever you can. In Oklahoma specifically, we have the good fortune of paying the least in the country for our Thanksgiving turkeys.
According to a study from FinanceBuzz, turkey cost for a 15-pounder is only around $24.85, which should be able to feed around 10 people.
But if you're fortunate enough to have some extra spending cash, there are a few ways to make Thanksgiving even more magical and family-oriented. You can even help support one of the lesser-known industries in Oklahoma by purchasing from your local turkey farm.
Take a closer look at locally raised turkeys in Oklahoma.
It may not come as a shock, but raising turkeys isn't the most popular career choice in Oklahoma. There are only around 20 turkey farms around the state, mostly in the central and eastern parts of the state. Which means every small purchase goes a long way for local farmers.
Buying from a local farmer not only helps them grow, but it's nearly as easy as buying from the local grocery store. But, instead of trusting a label, you can speak directly to the people responsible for caring for and feeding the bird you're taking home to the family.
Choosing your bird can become a family tradition, and so can hunting your own turkey for the occasion.
Hunt turkeys in Oklahoma with a bow until January 2026 and guns until November 21.
Traditions are different everywhere. But hunting in Oklahoma is not only a favorite hobby, its an important life skill to many people. It never hurts to know how to bring home a meal for the family using your tracking and hunting skills.
Hunters have the option to hunt their own turkey for Thanksgiving using either a bow and arrow or a gun. According to the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation, Archery season lasts much longer, until January 2026. If you decide to hunt with a gun, however, you only have until November 21, 2025. And don't forget the limit - only one tom turkey for the season.
Before heading out to hunt, always make sure to check regulations and clarify that your hunting spot isn't on private property (unless you have permission from the landowner).
