Every place has their own niche, unique things to do. In Oklahoma, our fun tends to involve animals. That's why when fair season rolls around, it's not just two legged family that come to enjoy the celebrations.

Wiener dog races are somewhat of a treasure at several of the fairs across Oklahoma. Not only is it an intense competition that most folks look forward to every year, but it's a chance to put these little ground huggers to work.

County fairs, free fairs and fall festivals aren't the only events to look forward to this time of year. But there are so many, it's hard to visit them all in one season. Take a look at some we've found this later summer into early fall that you and the family can visit.

There's a first time for every long-standing tradition, like wiener dog racing.

Earlier this summer, Shidler, Oklahoma had their first ever Wiener Dog Derby with several families bringing their dogs to see the best wiener win. Needless to say, after the success they had, there's a good chance that they'll be continuing the annual event next year.

The tradition of racing wiener dogs, or Dachshunds, has been kept up for years in several of Oklahoma's communities, such as in Cleveland County or Garvin County. In small towns, it's easy to get excited about something so small. But there are more wiener races in Oklahoma than just in small towns.

So far, here's where Oklahomans can catch wiener races in 2025:

Sunday, September 7 - Annual State Wiener Dog Racing Championships in Norman, Oklahoma

Sunday, October 19 - Oktoberfest Dachshund Dash in Tulsa, Oklahoma

There are several other opportunities happening at some of the county fairs in Oklahoma. Check out the list below.
