Check Out Moments From Altus, Oklahoma’s 27th Annual Cattle Drive
Things got real western in western Oklahoma on August 21, 2025. Don't worry, if you thought you were going crazy driving through Altus, you definitely weren't. There really were Texas Longhorns running through the base - and it was all on purpose.
The Altus Airforce Base held the 27th Annual Cattle Drive to honor western heritage and culture. They might be considered Texas Longhorns, but cattle (in general) play a crucial role overall in Oklahoma; especially in the western region of the state.
Several soldiers and airmen donned their uniforms as they pushed the cattle through the base while onlookers watched.
Why does Altus, Oklahoma celebrate the cattle drive?
According to the representatives from the Altus Air Force Base 97th Air Mobility Wing, pushing cattle like this is an ode to the tradition of "The Great Western Trail,” a path that over 6 million cattle and 1 million horses travelled during the late 19th century."
If you remember seeing a painting of cowboys talking Native Americans on horseback with a line of longhorns trailing behind them, then you've seen what most schools teach about the Great Western Trail.
Why do they use Texas Longhorns in Oklahoma for cattle drives?
Historically speaking, Texas Longhorns weren't just great for Texas. They're a pretty rough breed that could travel well and didn't need much from people. Not to mention how profitable they were back in the day and still are now.

However, we generally keep Longhorns around for more than just profit. They're a very sought after breed of cattle and hold a special place in our hearts in Oklahoma as a symbol for western heritage.
