As the ridiculously cold weather spread out to the Southeast coast of America, it gave us all the chance to see how alligators survive even the most brutal conditions.

They literally stick their nostrils up above the waterline and trance off into what is called brumation. It's not quite hibernation, but close. While they can live in this state for a while, the cold can eventually kill. Seeing as they've been around for hundreds of thousands of years, it's probably a safe bet these little murder lizards will live to see warmer days.
