Things really start to liven up once Oklahoma's spring time kicks off. Although the first day of Spring in Oklahoma isn't until March 20, 2025, many of us are already gearing up for some much needed warmer changes. With warmer temps and (hopefully) springtime showers, we'll see more than just flowers reappearing in gardens across the state.

Hummingbird Season in Oklahoma Is Quickly Approaching

Starting April 1, hummingbirds will be making their way back to Oklahoma. Folks will be able to witness their arrival easier if they have their hummingbird feeders already set up and prepared for the birds.

Birdwatching is something many of us do in Oklahoma, especially in the beginning of the spring season. You know what they say: spring showers bring may flowers. And flowers bring hummingbirds!

If you're new to the bird watching game, there are a few tips and tricks that you can use to encourage the hummingbirds to visit your porch or garden.

  • Try planting flowers like salvias, catmints, sunflowers, bleeding hearts and others in your garden. Make sure you time them to bloom when the birds arrive in April.
  • If you decide to hang a hummingbird feeder, be sure to keep it a ways away from other feeders. Hummingbirds can be territorial and you want them to be comfortable when stopping by for a snack.
  • Hummingbirds will feel more comfortable in well-lit areas that are around 10-15 feet from cover. You also want the area to be calm and quiet so they will stay long enough to drink.

If you've never seen a hummingbird up close and personal, you can easily make it happen this spring. Just don't forget to keep the feeders clean and away from predators.
