Join Fort Sill’s 77th Army Band for A Salute to Veterans
I know it's already November, but doesn't it seem like the year 2022 has been a year of "firsts?" And what I mean is that this year has been filled with the first events since the pandemic that is! So many cancellations of in-person events and celebrations have happened over the last few years, and I for one and so excited to have more and more events taking place once again.
Fort Sill's 77th Army Band will present its Salute to Veterans concert at 2 p.m. this Sunday, November 13 at the McMahon Memorial Auditorium, 801 NW Ferris Ave in Lawton. The concert is free and open to the public.
The 77th Army Band Commander, Warrant Officer Martin Johnston, said the concert is usually an annual event around Veterans Day, however this is the first time the band could perform the concert in person since 2019 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Last year, they offered the concert virtually.
Johnston said the band members are ready to put on a high-energy concert to give back to those who served before them.
“The 77th Army Band is excited and honored to pay tribute to our nation’s Veterans,” Johnston said. “We wouldn’t be here today if it weren’t for the service and sacrifice of our Veterans, so the least we could do is put on a special presentation for them.”
Several Comanche County high school choirs will participate in the concert in conjunction with the band. Johnston said along with the band, this will be an opportunity for area high school choir members to give back to veterans.
“Attendees can expect to hear some Glenn Miller, Fanfare for the Common Man, America the Beautiful, and other Americana songs from our big band,” Johnston said.
