When we think about government jobs, the vast majority of people tend to imagine a professional life on Luxury Street... the higher than average pay, the big benefits package, that federal pension, etc... but the last few days, our postal carriers have provided a new appreciation for the American work ethic.

In the worst conditions of ice and sleet, freezing rain, and sub-zero wind chills, our postal carriers have been out delivering what is probably mostly junk mail in what might be the last winter storm of 2022 for SWOK.

Credit card offers, bulk-coupon mailers, ads to buy vehicles that aren't even available on car lots, etc... As if people make rash and impulse decisions to make big purchases and real financial decisions out of a mailers inspiration. The original spam in your inbox.

While some neighborhoods have their mailboxes at the curb where postal workers can deliver the bulk of mail out the window of their vehicle, it's not that way everywhere in town. I see our carriers out walking quite often in Old Town North, that stretch of Fort Sill Boulevard from Gore up to Ferris... This time of year they're bundled up, during the summer you see nothing but tall socks and those traditional safari hats.

Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds.

The motto of the United States Postal Service is one we all sort of know, at least a few words to... most likely picked up from movies and pop culture, but times like these prove those aren't just words. It's the mission that our postal workers carry out every day without thanks or real appreciation.

If you'd like to say thanks to your mail carrier, drop something for them into your own mailbox. Are a few bucks for a hot coffee on a cold day going to ruin your budget for the month?

The Frozen Wichita Mountains

When Southwest Oklahoma gets a rare blizzard with serious snowfall, the mountains take on a fresh and stunning look. It's something we all get to experience thanks to the video and camera work of a few awesome locals with a stellar YouTube channel, The Pemberton Boys. They flew their drones and explored the mountains across SWOK while the views were grand, putting it online for everyone to enjoy.
