Keep medications in a secure place to prevent accessibility. Talk to friends and relatives about locking their medications away. Monitor your medications and never share your prescriptions. Taking someone else’s prescribed medication is not only illegal; it is dangerous with potentially fatal consequences.

Nationally, prescription drugs are the second most abused category of drugs after marijuana, with one in five young adults reporting that they have abused a prescription drug. Oklahoma ranks 5th in the Nation in drug overdose deaths. From 1999-2010, there were 91 opioid analgesic overdose deaths in Comanche County. In 2010 there were 154 non-fatal opioid analgesic overdoses in Comanche County.

Prescriptions drugs are easy to access, with the majority coming from home medicine cabinets, other family members or friends. The Lawton-Fort Sill Community Coalition Prescription Drug Committee encourages adults to be responsible and lock up their prescription medications.
