What do you do when a gigantic elk strolls into town and decides he never wants to leave?

People in Altus, Oklahoma had to find out the hard way today when a curious elk strolled through the streets until Game Wardens were called. Normally, we're hunting elk or admiring them from afar on the hunting fields along I-44. But, to be fair, it's their world - we're just living in it.

Check out the video and photos that the City of Altus shared from the experience.

Mess with the elk - get the antlers.

If you've never seen an elk up close, you might not think too much of their size - some think they're just a less colorful version of a reindeer. However, elk are not only enormous, but they can be very dangerous, very quickly.

The City of Altus Facebook page shared a video of the encounter and you can easily tell just how gigantic this thing was.

When Animal Control showed up and tried to herd it out of town, it cleared a typical 4 - 6 foot tall chainlink fence like it was nothing. He looked so strange, with his massive body just standing in an itty-bitty backyard.

Elk requires a police escort out of Altus.

Eventually, the Game Warden came out and helped safely and humanely tranquilize the beast and relocate him quickly. Apparently, he loved Altus so much, he wasn't willing to leave on his own accord.

I guess he was fairly bummed about the elk tours that were canceled because of the recent government shut down, so he took matters into his own hands. But the next time an elk cruises through your town, remember that those antlers aren't as soft as they look.
