Since their last big win as State Champions, the Elgin Owls have been fairly protective of their state title. But this year, the Elgin community was faced with a dilemma they weren't expecting at the beginning of the football season.

The Owl's away game against the Clinton Tornadoes happens to fall on Friday, October 31, 2025. So, the Mayor of Elgin and other community members wanted to know: should Halloween be celebrated on a different night to keep from competing with the football game?

We received an update from Mayor JJ Francais and what the city board decided for Halloween this year.

When will Elgin be celebrating Halloween this year?

While many people were betting on the city voting to move Halloween to another night, things did not turn out as expected. On Tuesday, Sept. 9, the Elgin City Council decided that Halloween would continue to be celebrated on October 31, despite the conflict with the ball game.

The game starts at 7 p.m. in Clinton, which is right smack dab in the middle of normal trick-or-treating hours in Elgin: 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Unfortunately, that means that families who wanted to both support the high school football team and go trick-or-treating in town will have to make a choice. That is, unless they opt to attend another local trunk or treat.
