Although experts are saying that we should be seeing lower gas prices across the U.S. this year, recent trends in Oklahoma show something different. But, is this a case of "what goes up must come down?"

Currently, Oklahoma's gas prices are climbing around the state. OK Energy Today reported that several large cities such Lawton, Tulsa and Oklahoma City have seen an increase this week and over the last month.

After evaluating the numbers from AAA, they reported the state seeing a "13-cent jump in the past week moving from $2.58 a gallon last week to $2.71 this week."

Some of the increases in average gas prices for individual cities were:

  • Oklahoma City: $2.67, up from $2.53 last week and $2.44 one month ago.
  • Lawton: $2.66, up from $2.50 last week.
  • Tulsa: $2.76 per gallon, up from $2.60 last week

Folks living in Harmon, Oklahoma are seeing the lowest county average of $2.62 and nearby Woodward County in the northwest is just a few cents higher at $2.66.

"Highest county average belongs to Coal County in the southeast at $3.05 while Dewey County in the northwest has an average of $2.98 and nearby Ellis County averages $2.96," per OK Energy Today.

Why are gas prices climbing?

It has to do with the cost of crude oil, which "affects 56% of the cost of gas prices," according to the AAA spokesperson, Andrew Gross. "Global oil prices have surged due to strong winter heating fuel demand and new U.S. sanctions against Russia’s energy sector."

Gross did point out that, although we've seen an increase now, there are still 26 states with average gas costs below $3. And there is still a high expectation for the U.S. to see lower gas prices.

2025 and 2026 Expected To Have Lower Gas Prices Across The U.S.

According to U.S. Energy Information Administration, they're expecting to see a few things happen in the next 2 years that will bring gas prices down. First, they anticipate lower crude oil prices. They also expect a decrease in gasoline consumption in America, thanks to the "increasing fleetwide fuel economy."

Oklahoma is one of the regions expected to see an overall decrease between now and 2026.
