Some Tips to Help Battle the Crazy Oklahoma Winter Weather

Mother Nature sure has been moody lately. We've seen 70-80 degree days recently and now we're sitting here freezing at 25 degrees, it's been a crazy couple of weeks weather-wise that's for sure. In case you haven't checked the forecast lately, we'll be seeing temperatures around 30 degrees today (01-06-22) and that's the high temp by the way. Tomorrow (01-07-22) isn't looking much better with overnight temps in the teens around 16 degrees. The only good news is we'll be warming up slightly by mid to late afternoon tomorrow.

To help battle this crazy Oklahoma Winter weather we've found some really useful tips and tricks to help keep you warm and safe until Mother Nature gives us a reprieve. You can find all kinds of tips and tricks online, YouTube has tons of great videos on the subject and is a great resource for Winter weather life-hacks. Some of these you'll know, others will be new to you and could help make things a little easier until we get to Spring. I don't know if I should even mention this and accidentally put it into the universe, but at least it isn't snowing and icing. I'm sure we won't escape that and will see some snow and ice sometime this Winter, hopefully, later, much later. I know, I know some of you are already saying "It's not that cold, compared to (Fill in the Blank)." These same people also say "It's just a little snow, where I'm from this is nothing." That may be true, but check back with me in September when it's 120 degrees outside and we'll see how well you're doing then. We might not be able to deal with the cold, snow and ice very well, but we can sure deal with the heat.

One of the biggest cold weather "things to do" is bring your pets indoors where it's warm. Like the old saying goes "If you're cold, they are too." I hate to see pets stuck outside when it's really cold, it's just cruel. Another great tip is to make sure all your hoses are disconnected from the outside water spigots to avoid bursting pipes. You'll also want to open your cabinet doors in bathrooms and kitchens to get some heat to the pipes and leave a small trickle of water running to avoid freezing pipes. That's never a good time.

Keep at least a half tank or more of gas in your vehicle during the winter and top off frequently. It has several benefits including the additional weight it creates that will help with traction, especially in rear wheel vehicles. Plus you typically use more gas in the winter due to warming the vehicle up and road conditions. One of the biggest safety issues with cold weather is space heaters. Be very, very careful with those, and make sure you turn them off when not in use, and make sure they're clear of anything flammable. Stay safe and warm, preferably indoors over the next couple of days until things warm up some and improve.
