We all know that most of Oklahoma's most powerful tornadoes are most likely to come during between March and June every year, what we all consider "tornado season." May is the peak month, usually when we see the most tornadoes and the most damaging. However, there are several incidents that show us we should never let our gaurd down.

Although things do tend to slow down in June for the weather in Oklahoma, there's always a reason to stay weather aware. Below are some of the worst cases that Oklahoma has seen since 1950.

We've seen at least one tornado every month in Oklahoma.

Oklahoma has seen at least one tornado in every month of the year, but some are more common than others - excluding the months in tornado season. According to records from the National Weather Service, we have seen the most tornadoes as follows:

  • October
  • November
  • September
  • August
  • February

Based off of previous numbers, we've seen the least amounf of tornadoes in January during the year. You'll see, however, that just because it rarely happens doesn't mean that when it happens, mother nature won't still be a force to be reckoned with.

It should be noted, as well, that we've seen out-of-season tornadoes as recently as last year on November 3 when three tornadoes struck various parts of the state.

Although things do get risky during these off-season weather events, we very rarely see tornadoes causing higher than EF3 or EF4 damage. But, it's never impossible, such as in the case of the Bethany tornado of 1930.

Just bear in mind that if you live in tornado alley, this is just part of life for the area. So always stay weather aware and have a plan in place, regardless of the time of year.
