There's a trend from Europe that folks in the U.S. are trying out for themselves. Although you could find some cool stuff with the metal detector in Oklahoma, some people are ditching the extra tools and diving right into mud larking.

What Is Mud Larking?

Back when London's River Thames was home to one of the busiest ports in the world, things that fell of the ships or were discarded in the river often floated to the riverbed. In the 17th century, people were looking for any way to get by (sound familiar?) and provide for their families.

According to thamesfestivaltrust.com, "‘mudlarking’ is the act of searching the riverbed for these historical treasures." So, really, it's what the boys in Holes would've done after the rain finally came down.

Where Can You Do It?

Generally, the rules for mud larking are very similar to metal detecting. You can pretty much do it anywhere as long as you have permission from the land owners.

If you're trying to go mud larking on government property, Native American land, or historical sites, you'll need a permit beforehand from the connected Parks and Recreation office.

What Do You Need For Mud Larking?

You should keep in mind that the waters you'll be in will probably not be the most sanitary. So gloves, rubber boots, waterproof overalls and some hand sanitizer might be important to use.

Don't forget the permit if you're going on property that requires one.

And, of course, a shovel.

Where Familiar Oklahoma Sayings Came From

We've all heard these super-common sayings growing up in Oklahoma. They're so common, they're not just Sooner State phrases, but this is where we heard them so often as youths. It's almost funny to learn some of the more seedy origins of phrases our ultra-conservative grandparents used to say. They'd likely turn over in their graves learning some of these meanings.
