Oklahoma State Fair Opening With Big Goals in Mind
The first day for the Oklahoma State Fair is just a few days away, on Thursday, September 11. The Fair staff just released an announcement of some big goals they're trying to meet on opening day.
In an effort to help fill the shelves at the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma, they're asking visitors to bring canned foods. In exhange, they're willing to give out a few different kinds of prizes.
Oklahoma is one of the seven states in the country that has a food insecurity rate above the national level. The Oklahoma State Fair is hoping to help the 15.4% of Oklahomans who're struggling with providing food for themselves or their families. Here's how.
Oklahoma State Fair's mission: collect largest donation EVER for Regional food bank.
If you're planning on coming to the Oklahoma State Fair on Thursday, Sept. 11, you can bring three canned foods or other items along with you and earn something for your donation.
According to the Oklahoma State Fair press release, they are trading three qualifying food items for "your choice of a Little Book of BIG DEAL$ coupon book OR a $5 off coupon for a same day walk-up carnival armband."

When you donate, they're also asking for you to drop your donation in the bin for your favorite first responder unit.
Whoever the organization is with the largest donation will have cash awards; part donated in their name to the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma and part directed to a charitable cause of their choice.
Which foods can you bring for the food drive?
They are asking for items such as:
- Peanut butter
- Rice
- Beans
- Canned goods like green beans, carrots, peas, corn, tomato soup, etc.
- Applesauce
- Banana chips
- Canned meats like tuna, salmon, chicken and ham
- Powdered products
- Dried pasta
Basically, they're looking for things that are shelf-stable, non-perishable and not expired. They also asked for folks not to pre-make anything, just donate it from right off of the shelf.
