Road Conditions in Lawton, Fort Sill Remain Treacherous
Well, here we are day three of Mother Nature's frozen wonderland. It's been a crazy couple of days in Lawton, Fort Sill and it's not over yet! Things are slowly but surely starting to melt off, but we've got a ways to go before the roads are clear. Right now the road conditions remain treacherous so if you can at all avoid getting out in it, please do. It's not worth risking life, limb, and vehicle over that's for sure!
From the looks of things, we should start warming up over the weekend, or at least get above freezing anyway. Everything that's melting right now will quickly re-freeze overnight making it even more slick and dangerous. It's like the entire town is covered in ice, which is exactly what it is. If it was snow we wouldn't be having so many issues, but this is basically solid ice from all the sleet we got over the past couple of days.
Most of the main roads aren't too bad. However, all the neighborhood streets and side roads are. Just trying to get out of your driveway and out of the neighborhood is challenging enough. On the way into work this morning I must have passed 10-20 cars that were stuck, slid off the road, or were just sitting and spinning their tires. Maybe by this weekend, it will all melt off and things can finally go back to normal.
If you do get out be very careful, mind your speed and distance. Give yourself plenty of time and space to get to where you're going. Watch those bridges and overpasses, they're still very slick and frozen. Don't be fooled by the roads, even those that appear to be thawed out. All it takes is just one ice patch to ruin your day and your vehicle. There are still a TON of cancellations and closures due to the ice so it wouldn't hurt to call ahead just to make sure wherever you're heading is open. You don't want to make a trip in vain.
Give it another day and the roads should improve to where you won't have any problems. In the meantime stay safe and watch out for all the amateurs, they're everywhere! A BIG THANKS to all of our City of Lawton street crews and first responders for everything they've done for us. We really appreciate it!
